Madekwe, a mixed race British-Nigerian child was born into a family in South London. Her father is Nigerian and Swiss as well as her mother is English. Her family was on the South London Council Estate, and then attended The Brit School aged 14. She was a student at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London which she graduated with an acting BA. Madekwe was also the lead character in How to lose friends & make people feel alienated, which was released by Sony Pictures Entertainment 2008. The credits she has in her theatre work are Little Sweet Thing by Roy Williams and Flight Path by David Watson.
Madekwe made her US debut in the series The Beautiful Life in 2009. The series aired only two episodes at The CW, and was eventually ended. Ashley Davenport was her role in ABC's drama Revenge. Madekwe had appeared in all episodes of the show's first two seasons as the show's regular. In May of 2013, it was announced that announcement was made that she would quit the show due to her guest appearance in the first episode of the series' third season. From 2014-2016, Madekwe starred in the role of Tituba on the show Salem. Madekwe, her long-time companion, Iddo, married Madekwe in June 2012. Both of them have been in Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Ashley Leggat was born in Hamilton, Ontario, into the extended family of a huge, large. Her four older brothers were also present and included twins Todd & Bram, Brett & Rob.
